    I know this is years late, but hopefully whoever posted this sees it still. I aaaaaaaaaalways think of this movie and know what you are talking about. Starts real then turns cartoon. And NOT Ponyo, that's a cartoon all the way through, and from Japan. I'm pretty sure this is an eighty's American movie. And if you have since found out from the original post... PLEASE let me know.
